Dionne Farris rose to prominence in the music industry because to her vocal talents on Arrested Development’s breakout smash single “Tennessee,” as well as other tunes from the group’s first album in 1992. Farris began singing in high school, singing in her school’s choir and starring in an Annie play in Bordentown, New Jersey. She went on to sing in Manhattan’s clubs as a solo artist and with a female vocal trio called Onyx, but she became dissatisfied in her late teens. In 1990, she went to Atlanta to live with her father and began dating drummer Rasha Don, an early Arrested Development member. The band was searching for a female vocalist, and although it wasn’t in Farris’ plans, she didn’t have anything else to do.
Farris was never a formal member of Arrested Development, preferring to think of herself as a member of the show’s extended family. Following the success of “Tennessee,” Farris received enough public exposure to create personal issues with bandleader Speech, and she left the group in 1993. Arrested Development’s record label, Chrysalis, offered her a solo contract, but she took a chance and turned it down, hoping for greater creative freedom than Chrysalis was prepared to give her. She contacted former members of the funk-rock band Follow for Now, David Harris and Milton Davis, and she and guitarist Harris started working on songs together. Her demo was picked up by Columbia, and she released her solo debut, Wild Seed — Wild Flower, in the summer of 1994, which included the smash song “I Know.”

After being featured on the soundtrack of the film Love Jones two years later, Farris’ version of the Van Hunt song “Hopeless” also broke through. Demand for a full-length sequel was strong, buoyed by the positive response. Farris’ sophomore album, however, was never published due to creative disagreements between her and Columbia. Farris was ultimately freed from her contract after a long contract battle. Rather than aggressively seeking a new company, Farris decided to leave the music business and devote her time to her daughter, whom she home-schooled.
Despite the fact that she had quit the business, Farris never stopped performing and found new inspiration when singing at church. For Truth if Not Love, her long-awaited sophomore album, was eventually released in 2007, and included the song “Stuck in the Middle.” She also started her own record label, Free & Clear, and released her third full-length album, Signs of Life, online in 2011.
Dionne Get Your Gunn: Featuring the Russell Gunn Quartet with Dionne Farris was released two years later, with Farris joining jazz trumpeter Russell Gunn. On the 2014 duet album DionneDionne, she teamed with guitarist Charlie Hunter. The CD included stripped-down renditions of vintage Warwick songs including “Always Something There to Remind Me” and “Walk on By,” as a tribute to the renowned R&B vocalist.
